too cool for school

It has definitely been a rough last few days with classes starting again after 3 months of sweet summer.  Sitting through the first week of classes definitely took away some of the excitement I had been feeling being back at school, moving into my new house and seeing all the friends I hadn't seen all summer.  It's hitting me all too quick that college is halfway over, growing up seems to be happening way too fast.

Back to school fashion:

It has been absolutely boiling hot in Delaware every day, walking to class in 88 degrees you can't help but melt.  Sitting in class, the most important thing is to be comfortable and, especially now, to stay cooled off (all i've been able to handle is jean shorts and a tank top all week).  Shorts and a light flowy blouse are, in my opinion, the best way to achieve a comfortable yet cute look.

Throwback:

I was late for pre-school everyday because I took so long picking out what to wear or begging my mom to make me a new dress before school, seriously, the teacher had to talk to my mom and me after class one day to figure out why I was always so late.  She recommended for my 4 year old fashionista self to start picking out my clothes the night before so that there would be no delay.  I have been doing that ever since (although I'm still late to about every thing I go to)

Motivation to get through the school daze:

School Humor

I'm sure this is how most people are feeling about classes starting and workload coming but try to remember that time is flying and soon there will be no school to complain about.  As miserable as getting up in the morning and having to go to class is, working hard and staying determined will only make your future brighter.

THROWBACKTHURSDAY- little mermaid

Circa 1996

Back when I was 4 years old and lived in Manhattan my mom and dad and their friends decided to dress their two little girls up as mermaids for Coney Island's annual Mermaid Day Parade.  They walked the boardwalk pushing the mermaids on a shopping cart turned sea palace and dressed up of people of the sea as well.  Little did they know that they would win 2nd Place!!!

The mermaid plaque hangs in our bathroom so I see it everyday I'm home.  Although I don't remember this day, the whole concept of it seems pretty entertaining.  I decided to look up some info about this extravagant affair

  • The Mermaid Parade is the nations largest art parade
  • Parade founded in 1983
  • Celebrates the sand, sea, salt air and beginning of summer
  • Each year a different celebrity King Neptune and Queen Mermaid rule over the proceedings
What I do remember about Coney Island is going there about 4 years ago with my parents and best friend Martina for the evening.  I had heard my parents talk about the Cyclone roller coaster numerous times throughout my childhood so I was excited to try it out finally... The Cyclone is an old wooden roller coaster that has been running for about 40 years.  Although not terrifyingly high compared to 6 flags coasters, it is definitely a bumpy ride and your more scared that the thing is going to snap!

Even though summer is coming to an end, if you get a chance to get to Brooklyn go have a ride and funnel cake for some last bit of Summer fun

Mermaid in my closet

14 years later I re-visited my mermaid days....

... at prom! I designed and my mom made both of my dresses for the two proms I attended Senior year of high school. We spent a lot of time looking for fabric in NYC, patterns and trying to create something unique, form fitting and elegant.  Although I wasn't going for a "mermaid" look, looking back now it seems to have ended up that way.  The first dress I wore was the gold and lilac-made with lilac spandex and another layer of stretch gold lace on top.  Although this dress wasn't for my prom I'd say it was probably my favorite of the two.  The turquoise dress was made of a similar princess cut pattern but instead with a halter and less of a train, with rhinestones accenting the neck.  Each dress has the sparkle and shine found in a lot of mermaid inspired fashion and the colors that can a be found in this style, muted pastels or bold cold colors.

begin to explore

Hello! My name is Emelia Prince Ruyle and I am starting this blog as a way to share my fashion creations, passions, explorations, and inspirations.  I am a 20 year old Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising double major at the University of Delaware.  This year I have a break from my design classes so hopefully I have more time to begin exploring the social media world of fashion and art.  I have created a tumblr: EXPLORE as a visual inspiration wall that I would love for you to check out as well.  I express my creativity through my fashion designs and my daily dress.  My family and travel experiences have had the most influences on my life, I have just recently returned from 7 weeks interning in Hong Kong and will be traveling to Paris this winter to study for 6 weeks.  Both of my parents are freelance artists who have inspired me my entire life to find my passion and never give up on it.  Growing up I was encouraged to express myself through many forms of art- music, dance, acting, etc. but the main thing that stuck with me through the years is my love for fashion.  My mother had a childrens clothing store in NYC for the first 5 years of my life, where she designed and made all of the garments, which allowed me to wear basically whatever I wanted by having her make me numerous dresses and outfits that I would design as even a toddler.  She is also a costume designer and I grew up coming with her to costume fittings and clothing stores.  As I grew up she taught me how to sew my own clothes and I began designing and making numerous garments for myself.

Passion for Fashion
Appearance is such a huge part of how people can learn more about others, and it's done with out even having to say a word.  I think this is what makes fashion so empowering and why it is so important in the world.  Self-expression is necessary for everybody and fashion provides the perfect platform for it.  I want to work in the fashion industry to express not only myself but to give others the chance to express themselves.

My Style:
This silk dress was made by my grandmother in the 60's for herself (the sculpture in the first picture is actually of my grandma.  My grandpa is a sculptor- he made it of her when they were in college and it was the first sculpture of a person he ever made), the dress was then passed down to my mom and is now mine!  It is a simple shift dress but the bold colors and pattern make it unique and special.  I love bright color combinations, patterned fabrics, and hints of sparkle so this outfit is the perfect representation of my personal style.  I paired this dress with a rhinestone necklace from Urban Outfitters and Pewter colored pumps from Aldo.
